Barn Door Questions
Do barn doors need a track system?
Yes. Barn doors slide on a track mounted above the doorway rather than swinging on hinges. The track, rollers, and hardware are sold separately from the door panel. Make sure your wall has enough clear space beside the opening for the door to slide fully open.
How much wall space do I need for a barn door?
You need clear wall space equal to the width of the door on one side of the opening. For a 36" barn door, you need at least 36" of unobstructed wall to the left or right of the doorway. Check for light switches, outlets, and wall fixtures that might interfere.
Do barn doors block sound?
Barn doors don't seal as tightly as hinged doors because they hang on a track with small gaps around the edges. They're best for spaces where visual separation matters more than sound blocking — like pantries, walk-in closets, laundry rooms, and open-concept room dividers.
Can I use a barn door for a bathroom?
Barn doors work for bathrooms where full sound privacy isn't critical — like powder rooms or en-suite bathrooms in master bedrooms. For main bathrooms, a hinged door with a proper latch provides better privacy and sound isolation. If you prefer the barn door look, consider adding a privacy lock to the track hardware.
